My ever favorite book will always be Murakami’s ‘Kafka on the Shore’, but it's not much of a “life-changing book”. Now literature and its purpose may not be very deep-dwelling for people who don’t take an interest in literature. Because its not just the self- help books that teach us, stories can also maneuver a reader’s life. If a book’s purpose is to move the readers to virtue and betterment, I have quite some on my list:
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: This book has been my favorite teacher on manners and feminism. As a girl bought up in a household struggling to keep up the traditional values along with modern liberal thoughts, I could relate to Miss Joe. Her character, the one that stands out of the other three sisters taught us its good to be a little out-spoken to stand firm on your views. Meg taught me to be gentle and caring. Beth made me realize that sometimes you need to sacrifice your dreams for your loved ones; and Amy, the showed you can sometimes be selfish and nobody’s perfect! The Help by Kathryn Stockett: Okay, now the ones who have read this book might be thinking, racism, yes racism, but also individuality. This book sincerely uplifts your individuality, to unapologetically be you. I could relate to Skeeter who was taunted for her unconventional need for doing “something different." She was made fun of for being a little over five feet tall. Situations were cruel, but she strived and succeeded. As a lean underweight kid, I had to face a lot of body shaming, and reading this book was my way to achieving mediocre confidence! Do check out my post on this book- Skeeter and Me
My Autobiography by Charlie Chaplin: Ohh he was so funny! That's the thought I have whenever someone says “Chaplin”. He, like many other successful personalities, had a terrible childhood. But what makes Chaplin’s story imprinted on my mind years after I read this book is his hunger for stage and acting. He was sent to the workhouse early in his childhood to make a living, but he sailed through it to cheer people worldwide. His life is truly an epitome of determination.
